How Far Would You Go to Keep Your Family Together?
Marlin reveals: What “red flags” were missed by their child’s pediatrician, teachers and parents. Marlin Keesler grew up in a broken family environment in which he moved from home to home every year. He lost his dad to suicide when he was nine and his stepfather to a heart attack at 16. After school, time and summers were spent working as a means of bringing in extra income for the family. Now he is a very happily married dad, committed to ensuring his children grow up in a much more stable home. This is not without its challenges as he has two special needs teenagers. His son has a high functioning form of autism called Asperger's syndrome and his daughter has a genetic defect called Turners syndrome. Both have difficulty interacting socially with their peers as well as learning in the mainstream academic environment.
As a means to supplement each child's education, the family took up a quest to visit every state in the U.S. The goal for the children was to learn something from each travel experience. The goal for Marlin and his wife, Jeanne, was to rekindle their own relationship, which was suffering from the stress load they carried, and find a way to reconnect with their two children, who were on a path of regression and withdrawal. Each destination was determined by a local marathon that Marlin would run. Their experience far exceeded any expectations they had. They went far beyond simply reconnecting with their children. They overcame the natural phases of fear and hopelessness, attributed to having developmentally challenged children, to having an incredibly strong family bond that has left each of them with hope and confidence of a promising future.
Marlin captured their journey in what began as a scrap book to chronicle their adventures later evolved into the full fledged published book "Our Life on the Run...". In addition to sharing marathon adventures, love of country, and the spirit of family togetherness, the true essence of the story reveals the power and rewards that come from a well designed family support system.
How to Protect Your Child from School Violence and Bullying:
Most parents believe our schools are protecting our children from bullying and violence. This would be great, if it were true.
Research shows that most students will not tell their parents that they are being bullied, because they are worried about being retaliated against, humiliated, embarrassed, or they just do not want to upset you. In 71% of cases of students in kindergarten through 3rd grade, teachers were present but did not intervene. Derek will address the following: • What a parent can do if their child is bullied
Derek Randel is a speaker, coach, and author who speaks nationally on how to remove the yelling from your home, how to protect your child from bullying and school violence, and options that are open to educators who are bullied by parents and students. Nutrition & Behavior
Research supports the connection between good nutrition and optimum brain functions, such as mood, learning and behavior. While medication may be necessary for some children, many learning difficulties relate to classical nutritional deficiencies and brain sensitivities. This seminar was designed to help attendees develop an understanding of the links between learning disabilities (ADD, ADHD, Asperger’s and Autism) and a child’s often less-than-ideal diet, allergies and toxins. By empowering parents, grandparents, caregivers and teachers with effective tools and techniques, we can best provide a calm, safe and nurturing environment (at home and in the classroom) for our children to grow into the responsible, productive and gifted people they were born to be.
Gail will address how to:
